Description
The Green Cloud Scheduler decreases the amount of energy consumed in cloud infrastructures by reducing the number of used servers while maintaining the required workload computing resources. By an intelligent, energy-aware redistributon of virtual machines among servers, the number of servers hosting virtual machines is reduced and the unused servers are turned off.Vision
One of the major cause for the service centers high amount of consumed energy is the inefficient utilization of IT computing resources. The IT computing resources in nowadays service centers are under-used, usually operating below the optimal loads for energy efficiency.
We envision smart autonomous cloud infrastructures capable of self-adaptation in pursuing high-level goals such as reducing the amount of energy consumed while complying with the service level agreements.
History
The Green Cloud Scheduler is an achievement of the work done in the context of the GAMES (Green Active Management of Energy in IT Service centres) FP7 project. GAMES is a 30 months European research project, co-financed by the European Commission within the 7th Framework Programme of Research and Technological Development, aiming at developing a set of methodologies, software tools and services, and innovative metrics for the Energy Efficiency Design and Management of the Data Centres of the next generation (namely IT Service Centres), which will be expected to operate in a cloud oriented computing paradigm.GAMES aims at drastically improving the energy efficiency of the Data Centers and reducing their carbon footprint, while guaranteeing a satisfactory overall performance of the services delivered.
